About Moshe Fried

Born in Poland, the oldest of 3 brothers, Moshe lost his parents and one brother during the war, but together with his brother Avraham, miraculously survived.

Although, he spent time in the concentration camps, his beautiful voice kept him alive when he would sing for bread in front of the German officers.

Moshe returned to Poland after the liberation and met his wife, the late Bela Shtokman, while they were performing there. He was a soloist in a 40 person choir and Bela, 13 years younger, played the mandolin as part of the 30 piece orchestra.

In 1951, they got married and had a daughter Leah. They soon migrated to Israel where their son Kalman was born.

Moshe and Bela migrated to Australia in 1962 and settled in Elwood before later moving to Caulfield.

Moshe worked with leather and shoes, running a small factory from home. He has 4 grandchildren.

An active member of the Jewish community, Moshe was Chief Chazan at South Caulfield Shule for over 10 years and has led services in many Shules throughout Melbourne. Moshe loves all types of music, but especially opera and classical.
